Closing 20 April 2020

Previous Kōanga Festival playwrights 2016 - 2019 are encouraged to submit their concepts for this new commission, 'As The Idiom Will Admit'.

"I certify that the above is as literal a translation of the Treaty of Waitangi as the idiom of the language will admit of."  (Signed) Henry Williams, cautionary cover note to the official “translation” of the Treaty of Waitangi, Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

The first untruth on the Te Tiriti o Waitangi started with the cover-note.  This untruth is also the provocation for Te Pou Theatre’s first ever commission and upcoming new show ‘As the idiom will admit’.

The Concept:

First conceived in 2016, this show intends to be a bi-lingual satirical response to Henry Williams’s note and its meaning about te reo Māori. We envision this show to be a collection of uplifting, tongue-in-cheek ten-minute works. These can be plays, poems, waiata, speeches, whaikorero or movement discussing, addressing or revelling in the kaupapa of translation, our language and its limitations or it’s limitless potential.
