Kaupapa | About

Hoʻolana Ka Manaʻo is an evening celebrating Hawaiian hula, music, culture and the strength of connection created through dance.

Presented by The Hula Journey, the home of two Hawaiian hula schools, the Women of Hālau Ka Waikahe Lani Mālie and the Men of Hālau Kahulaliwai, Hōʻike brings together the tauira of The Hula Journey to share the learning, discipline and aloha cultivated throughout the year.

From the power and rhythm of hula kahiko to the beauty and storytelling of hula ʻauana, the two hālau hula will journey you through mele, oli and hula that connect us to place, people, ancestry and story.

This year’s Hōʻike is especially significant as our keiki return to the stage for the first time in 11 years, marking the beginning of a new generation learning and carrying Hawaiian hula here in Aotearoa.

Founded in 2010 under the lineage of Kumu Hula Blaine Kamalani Kia of the Ka Lauaʻe Foundation, The Hula Journey became the first sanctioned Hawaiian hula school of its lineage established in Aotearoa.

At the heart of this year’s production is Hoʻolana Ka Manaʻo — the idea of lifting the mind and spirit, particularly through challenge, change and uncertainty.

Through hula we remember where we come from, strengthen where we stand, and lift our eyes towards what lies ahead.
