Some conversations change everything.
At an engagement party, two women who have never met find themselves alone in a bathroom.
One is trying to hide.
The other simply asks, “Are you okay?”
What begins as an ordinary act of kindness unfolds into an extraordinary conversation that exposes the hidden ripple effects of sexual harm, challenging assumptions about truth, loyalty, family and healing. As long-held beliefs begin to unravel, both women are forced to confront questions neither expected to face.
Written by award-winning Tāmaki Makaurau playwright Sheree Veysey, Party Conversations is a powerful, emotionally rich one-act drama that balances humour, humanity and heartbreak with remarkable authenticity. An earlier version of the play placed third in the 2024 Australian National One Act Play Competition, and the script has twice been shortlisted for the prestigious Adam New Zealand Play Award. Sheree’s writing is celebrated for its nuanced characters, emotional honesty and ability to find moments of humour, even in the most difficult conversations.
Directed by Ami Coster, a graduate of the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) with more than forty years’ experience across theatre and film, the production features emerging actors Emma Hayes (Abbie) and Viola Ember (Sarah), whose compelling performances bring this intimate story vividly to life.
Following the performance, audiences are invited to stay for Beyond the Curtain—a facilitated community conversation with lived experience advocates, survivor organisations and invited guests. Together, we’ll reflect on the themes raised in the play, explore pathways to healing, challenge stigma, and continue the conversation in a safe, compassionate and hopeful environment.
This inaugural event also marks the public launch of Liminal Rhythm Trust—a survivor-led charity supporting wāhine beyond survival after sexual harm through peer-led programmes, restorative retreats, community connection and innovation. All proceeds from the evening will help establish and grow these services across Aotearoa.
AUDIENCE ADVISORY: Party Conversations contains descriptions of sexual assault and explores themes that may be distressing or triggering for some audience members. While the subject matter is challenging, it is ultimately a story of courage, compassion and hope. Self-care is encouraged, and support information will be available throughout the event.
Due to its themes and occasional coarse language, this production is recommended for audiences aged 16 years and over. Teenagers are encouraged to attend with a supportive adult, as Beyond the Curtain provides an opportunity to continue the conversation together.
