Kaupapa | About

A bold new award-winning play about pleasure, power, and the politics of being heard.

She writes smut. They call her unfit. She calls that Tuesday.

Meet Aroha: Māmā, divorcee, loyal friend and undercover successful ‘cliterature’ author. Aroha writes for her own pleasure—literally. Her erotic fiction has built a loyal online following, but when she dares to advance her “cliterature” into a podcast, the backlash from those closest to her is swift and brutal. As her stories ignite desire in fans and outrage in her family, Aroha must navigate shame, sisterhood, and the fight for her voice—on and off the page.

WET is a fierce, funny, and unflinching exploration of wahine sexuality, creative freedom, and the messy, beautiful contradictions of modern motherhood.

With a cast of unforgettable characters and a story that pulses with heart, this is theatre that isn’t afraid to get a little… sticky.

“Clever & thought provoking… funny & nuanced.”
– Audience member

Originally commissioned by Te Pou Theatre as part of the 2024 Kōanga Festival Playwrights Programme, this work enjoyed a first reading filled with riotous laughter, knowing sighs – and the odd groan – that rippled through the audience. Playwright, Dr Tūī Matelau went on to receive the 2024 ADAM NZ Play Award for Best Play by a Pasifika Playwright for this work.

WET makes its Aotearoa Premiere season with Te Pou Theatre, proudly presented in partnership with Auckland Live and Te Ahurei Toi o Tāmaki Auckland Arts Festival.
